We’re wise to learn what we can from other writers who have gone before us
This blog is about writing and publishing. I share what I know in the posts, and you share what you know in the comments. Our monthly segment, UR Turn, allows us to focus on this. We can learn from each other.
In addition, we can also learn from other writers through their blogs, podcasts, webinars, and books. Plus, we can read magazines about writing.
Over the years I’ve learned a great deal. I strive to apply what I learn. Then I share the results.
Today’s UR Turn question is, what’s the best writing advice you’ve ever heard?
For me, the answer is easy. I’ve repeated it here many times. It is simply to write every day. Doing this changed my life and my career as a writer.
Now it’s your turn.

Have someone else read your content out loud to you.
I like it! (I have my computer read my writing to me, but it’s not the same as a real person.)
Yes! I attended a small writers group monthly meeting in my favorite town, the town which is the setting for my story. The chapter was about the town burning in 1889. The other writers took turns reading it. It validated my writing and they experienced a bit of their own town history. Very personal and very worthwhile.
Kathy, what a great experience!
(My fiction books are set in an unidentified city, so I can’t do that.)
Best advice I received is to write every day. I don’t always do it, but I feel better about life in general when I get my thoughts down. I’m working on a long story—something I’ve never done before. Writing often helps my characters develop.
Noreen, may your long story go well! I wish you the best.
I don’t know about best advice, but for me, worst advice was to write everyday. i just ended up feeling guilty because it didn’t work for me. Just as there are pantsers and plotters, I believe there are binge writers and everyday writer. I wrote about this in my blog https://patriciamrobertson.com/2017/09/14/are-you-an-every-day-writer-or-a-binge-writer/
Could be material for another byline.
Patrica, you make me smile! I so like your descriptive name of binge writers. Thanks for sharing an alternate point of view.
